Abstract

1495874 Drilling fluids NL INDUSTRIES 1NC 29 March 1976 12601/76 Heading E1F A drilling fluid comprises oil, water or an emulsion thereof; a thickening agent; and ilmenite having a particle size such that at least 85% by weight passes through a 325 mesh screen in an amount sufficient to substantially increase the density of the fluid. Preferably -the thickening agent is bentonite, attapulgite, montmorillonite, starch, cellulose derivatives, sodium polyacrylate, natural gums e.g. gum karaya, bacterial gums, asbestos or a mixture thereof, when water is the continuous phase; and asphalt, air-blown asphalt, gibonite, fatty acid soaps, olephilic bentonite, oleophilic attapulgite, magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, natural and synthetic rubbers, polyisobutylene, asbestos or a mixture thereof, when oil is the continuous phase. Preferably the ilmenite has a density of at least 4.3. Other weighting agents e.g. barite, hematite, celestite, galena and mixtures thereof may be added to the fluid.
