Abstract

1495766 Bookbinding XEROX CORP 30 April 1975 [30 May 1974 (2)] 17990/75 Heading B6A In apparatus for binding books with an adhesive binding strip, for instance the binding member disclosed in Specification 1,412,426, a stack 17 of sheets to be bound is held between a bi-partite clamping means, each part 27, 27a of which may be pivoted to drive the stack downwardly against the binding strip 47 and move the strip against one heated platen 14, means being provided for biasing other heated platens 12, 13 against the stack to complete the binding. The stack is initially placed manually between guides 18, 19 and rests upon a retractable plate 21. Upon clockwise, manual rotation of a knob (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), the guides 18, 19 approach one another and calipers associated therewith engage the sides of the stack and determine the position of the heated platens 12, 13. Binding strip guides 28, 29 are also moved towards each other to initial positions. The positions of the guides 18, 19 and platens 12, 13 are locked by a linear clutch Fig. 10 (not shown), when the calipers engage the stack, and are held as the knob (22) is rotated anticlockwise to set the positions of the bipartite clamp 27, 27a and final positions of the strip guides 28, 29. Several such final positions are defined by the teeth of a ratchet (92) corresponding to the several widths of binding strip which may be used for stacks of various thickness. The stack is manually moved laterally clear of the calipers. If a binding strip of appropriate width is available, a light shows. Upon actuation of a "Biro" button, clamps 27, 27a move through the guides 18, 19 to clamp the stack. A length of strip is cut and fed between strip guides 28, 29 and the clamps 27, 27a are pivoted upwardly to lift the stack clear of the plate 21 which is then retracted. The clamps are then pivoted downwards whilst platens 12, 13 are moved towards each other Fig. 5 (not shown) thereby supporting and heating the strip. Next the stack is raised, the platens 12, 13 separated and the stack lowered again, this time into contact with the biased, heated platen 14 as shown in Fig. 6. Finally, the platens 12, 13 are moved together to apply the edges of the strip 47 to the sides of the stack. Abutment means 55, 56 on the guides 28, 29 limit downward displacement of the stack in dependence upon its thickness.
