1495497 Moulding candles ALPENHOF DESIGN Ltd 18 Nov 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 39114/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C5] A candle carrying a design in relief is moulded by printing a 2-dimensional representation of the design on to a master member, converting this to a 3-dimensional pattern on the master member, and moulding the candle itself or a final or intermediate mould for the candle against the master member. The desired design is screen-printed or photographed on to and then etched into a printing plate either as a negative for casting a sheet of wax for wrapping about a wax core to form a candle, or as a positive for carting a flat silicone rubber mould (not shown). A flat sheet of wax is cast in this mould and either applied about a wax core to make a candle or about a wax or wooden core to form a model 64 for casting a final mould 68. The sheet of wax corresponds to the part 18 of the finished candle. The wax or modelling clay pieces correspond to the ribs 14, 16 and 24 and are attached to complete the model 64. The model is inverted in a moulding cylinder 50 and is located by a hollow element 60 and a pin 66 while a silicone rubber mould is cast about it. The mould 68 is removed from the cylinder 50 and slit down one side for removal from the model. It is replaced in the cylinder 50 for casting the relief parts 14, 16, 18, 24, &c. of a candle about a plain wax core 2 which has had the tapered end 6 dip coated with a layer 10. The candles may be triangular or square in section and the recesses of the design may be blackened by painting all over and rubbing off the paint on the raised portions. The model may be made from a curved printing plate to avoid using an intermediate mould.
