Abstract

1494756 Copy resistant documents CALSPAN CORP 18 Feb 1975 6833/75 Heading B6A At least some portions of a document are provided with a background which has a reflectance sufficiently low at wavelengths to which a detector of a copying machine is most sensitive to render low reflectance indicia on the document resistant to copying, but the background reflectance, is high enough at wavelengths to which the detector is least sensitive to permit detection of the indicia with the human eye. In the figure, typical eye sensitivity as a function of wavelength is shown as curve X, typical copy machine detector sensitivity as curve Y, the reflectance of an ink used for marking indicia on the document as curve I and the reflectance of a suitable ink background coating as curve Z. The reflectance of the background remains low and for the most part less than that of the marking ink in the range of wavelengths in which the copying machine detector is sensitive. Thus the detector cannot distinguish the indicia from the background and cannot make a good copy of the document. The background coating may be an orange/red ink on a dull black paper. Alternatively, a grey/ black ink may be sprayed on to a white paper to produce coated edges and an uncoated centre.
