Abstract

1494263 Preparing expandable polymer particles SEKISUI KASEIHIN KOGYO KK 23 May 1975 [3 June 1974] 23002/75 Heading C3C Expandable aromatic mono-vinyl polymer particles are made by dispersing the particles of a polymer derived from at least one aromatic monovinyl monomer in water in the presence of calcium hydroxide as suspending agent and impregnating the particles by adding to the suspension an expanding agent which does not dissolve or only swells the polymer, has a b.p. lower than the Vicat softening point of the polymer and is gaseous or liquid at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. In the examples polystyrene or styrene/butyl acrylate or divinylbenzene copolymer particles were suspended in water containing calcium hydroxide, in an autoclave, optionally together with tribromophenylallyl ether as flame retardant and then impregnated with n-butane or n-pentane to form expandable particles which which were pre-expanded and then moulded with steam.
