Abstract
1418560 Particulate systene polymers; foamable products therefrom SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK and SEKISUI KASEIHIN KOGYO KK 27 July 1973 35993/73 Headings C3P and C3C Particulate styrene polymers (styrene hereinafter includes derivatives thereof and their mixtures) are produced by suspension polymerization in which styrene polymer particles with a size of 0À4 to 1À8 mms. are suspended in water and a catalyst solution comprising 60- 100 wt. per cent of the total catalyst to be used and 1-10 wt. per cent of the total styrene monomer to be used, and a monomer-solution comprising 90-99 wt. per cent of the total monomer to be used and 0-40 wt. per cent of the total catalyst to be used, are independently added to said suspension in a dropwise fashion whilst carrying out the polymerization. The catalyst solution and the monomer solution may contain 0À0025-2 wt. per cent of a surfactant (based on the total monomer), which is soluble in the styrene monomer. The catalyst solution may either be a solution in the styrene monomer alone, or a further solvent such as toluene may also be present. A foaming agent may be present during the polymerization in an amount of 2-20 wt. per cent (based on the weight of particles produced) (n-pentane was used in Example 7) and in Example 5 such an agent is added after polymerization-the particles produced are suspended in water using magnesium pyrophosphate and sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and then propane and butane are fed into the vessel under pressure, whereupon they are absorbed by the suspended polymer particles which are thus rendered foamable. The expandable particles are foamed by immersion in boiling water.
