Abstract

1493774 Pneumatic separation RAYTHEON CO 7 May 1976 [22 May 1975] 18892/76 Heading B2H An air classification apparatus comprises an open-ended drum 16 having its axis inclined to the horizontal, means for rotating the drum, means for creating a stream of air through the drum towards the upper end thereof, and means for adjusting the angle of inclination of the drum. The material to be classified is fed into the drum 16 from a hopper 10 by an auger 36 in a duct 32. The heavy materials falling from the end of the duct 32 eventually pass out of the lower end of the drum onto a conveyor 18 whereas the light materials are carried by the air stream into a chamber 20. Here a further separation takes place, the lightest fraction being carried by the air stream through ducts 70 and 70a to cyclones 24 and 24a and the medium fraction falling against the upwardly flowing air stream to the bottom of the chamber and onto a conveyor 22. The ratio of these fractions may be controlled by varying the size of the chamber 20 to control the velocity of the air passing therethrough. For this purpose the chamber may be provided with panels (82) and (82a) attachable to the walls of the chamber at different positions, Fig. 5 (not shown); with baffles (92) attached to rotatable shafts (94) passing through the chamber, Figs. 6A and 6B (not shown); or with panels (104) and (104a) hinged to the walls of the chamber, Fig. 7 (not shown). The drum 16 is provided with longitudinally extending ribs (72) on its inner wall and is mounted on a platform 38 which is pivotably attached at 116 to supports 118 to enable its inclination to be varied.
