Abstract

1493631 Control of AC motors HILLALDAM COBURN Ltd 27 Nov 1975 [13 Sept 1974] 40079/74 Heading H2J [Also in Divisions E1-E2 and H1] Door operating apparatus for an up-andover door (Divisions E1-E2) includes an electric capacitor motor 20 (Fig. 7) coupled to the door by transmission means, a speed sensitive switch 9 mounted on a shaft driven by the motor 20 and connected between the motor 20 and an A.C. power source 21, 23, and means such as resistors 26-28 and selective bridging circuit 30 whereby the voltage applied to the motor 20 can be adjusted so that, after an initial period following energization of the motor 20, the motor power output only sufficiently exceeds that required to move the door such that, if the door meets an obstruction, the motor speed will drop to cause opening of the switch 9 to de-energize the motor. The initial energization of the motor 20 may be effected by means of a low voltage circuit 31, a push button 32 being pressed to energize a start relay 33 and close a switch 29, thereby to apply full power voltage to the motor 20. After a delay, the switch 29 opens by which time the switch 9 is closed. In the modification of Fig. 7, opening of the switch 9 connects the power supply via contact 9a to a loop circuit including a reversing relay 34 having a latching contact 34a and a contact 34b bridging the push button 32 in the circuit 31. A contact 35 is ganged to the changeover switch 24 controlling operation of the motor 20, such that when the door is obstructed during closing the motor is reversed to open the door but if the speed of the motor falls during opening of the door the motor 20 stops. The transmission means coupling the motor 20 to the door may comprise a worm drive, sprocket and chains but preferably the motor shaft directly drives a lead screw which cooperates with a nut in a carriage mounted on the door. The circuit 31 may include means whereby the door operation can be radio-controlled.
