Abstract

1492978 Co-axial cable joints POST OFFICE 23 May 1975 [23 May 1974] 23089/74 Addition to 1418895 Heading H2E Two coaxial cable ends are joined by locating a respective collar 5 over each exposed end of the outer conductors 6, butt-jointing 9a the inner conductor ends, assembling a split ferrule 11 over the collars 5 with its centre portion interconnecting the outer cable ends and having an internal diameter equal to that of the outer conductors, and securing a cover (steel ferrule 1) over the ferrule 11 to hold the joint in longitudinal compression. A steel ferrule 1 is slipped over a cable end, and the paper and steel tapes 3, 4 are stripped back, a clip 2 applied to each end and a copper collar 5, internally tapered, is secured over the outer conductor 6 and steel tape 4 at each end by splaying the outer conductor end 8 and soldering to the outer conductor end via holes 5a. The inner conductors are resistance-brazed and fitted with insulating spacer discs 10. The copper ferrule 11, split longitudinally into two halves, is assembled with large diameter ends 12, 13 fitting around and soldered to reduced portions 7 of the collars 5. The steel ferrule 1 is finally crimped against the outer ends of the collars 5. The collars 5 may be stepped instead of tapered. In a temporary joint, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ferrule (1) at one end fits against a shoulder (22) or circlip on a sleeve (5) and at the other end is screw threaded to a locking device (25) on an outer conductor; the copper ferrule 2 may be held in position by wire binding.
