Abstract

1492965 Shaft seals DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 April 1975 [29 April 1974] 18810/74 Heading F2B In order to keep the lubricating pressure in groove 19 constantly in excess of the ambient water pressure, the seal of the propeller shaft of an underwater vehicle includes a spring-loaded piston 21, subjected, on the spring-loaded side, to the ambient water pressure. The sealing rings 15, 16 are of conventional O, X or C section and have axial play in grooves 17, 18. In another form, an intermediate stage of pressure reduction is provided in lubricating groove (19a, Fig. 2, not shown) pressurized by a face differential piston subject to the pressure in groove 19.
