Signal T 2 after comparison with a setpoint voltage is used to control the percentage of tobacco in the dense ends. As shown the dense ends are formed by periodic lifting of the trimmer 24 so that the percentage in the dense ends may be controlled by adjusting the feed rate of the tobacco feeder 10 or the amount of comparison produced by the vacuum chamber 11. The average weight per unit length is controlled by adjusting the height of the trimmer.
