Abstract

1492673 Acoustic measurement of velocity SIEMENS AG 10 Jan 1975 [21 Jan 1974] 1201/75 Heading G1G In a device for measuring the speed of a railmounted wheeled vehicle, a pressure wave generator and two receivers, all on the vehicle, are coupled to one rail, the receivers being on opposite sides of the generator, and the times taken for a pressure wave to travel from the generator through the rail to the receivers are utilized in an evaluator to give the vehicle speed. An ultrasonic generator US is coupled to the rail SE by the vehicle wheel R and pulses picked up by receivers El, E2 which may be coupled to the rail by wheel axles, are amplified by amplifiers VR1, VR2 prior to an evaluation process in unit AG2 to give the speed as a reading on an instrument V or additionally as a signal to a distance measuring instrument S. The distance measured by S may be compared with that measured by a driven wheel of the vehicle to produce brake and drive signals to control wheel spin or skid. A further embodiment (not shown) uses four receivers and two transmitters to avoid possible spurious results due to rail joints.
