Abstract

1492654 Automatic control systems J M VOITH GmbH 2 April 1975 [6 April 1974] 13406/75 Heading G3N The position of a floating body is controlled according to actual forces and direction of wind, waves and current measured before they act on the body. The measured values are compared in a computer with reference values, to control thrust generating devices on the body. In the embodiment, the measuring devices 4, 5 are mounted on buoys 3 spaced around the body 1 e.g. a drilling platform, or on booms mounted on the body itself. Anemometers 4 measure the direction and strength of the wind, and pressure devices 5 measure oncoming waves and currents e.g. the height, steepness and speed of advance of the waves. The results are transmitted e.g. by radio to computer 7, which also receives a signal from equipment 12 measuring the actual positional change of the body, and from device 10 measuring the actual forces on the body. The measured values are compared with reference values, from a model or previous tests, to control the thrust generators 2 e.g. variable thrust and direction propellers. In alternatives, the measurements are made optically or acoustically.
