Abstract
1492529 Treatment of lithographic plates VICKERS Ltd 26 May 1976 21945/76 Heading B6C A planographic printing blank provided with two layers of different lithographic properties and a protective surface layer is imaged and then treated with a composition which removes the protective layer, promotes the water-receptive characteristics of one layer, maintains these characteristics up to the time of printing, and promotes the inter-receptivity of the other layer. The blank is preferably a plastics material, e.g. polyester, with a vapour-deposited layer of aluminium and a protective surface material. The solvent for the protective material is acetone ethanol, monoethylene glycol, propanol, water or mixtures thereof; the desensitizer promoting water-receptivity may be gum arabic, mesquite gum, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, ammonium alginate, sodium hexametaphosphate, starch acetate, phosphoric acid or a salt, citric acid tartaric acid oxalic acid, or a citrate, tartaric or oxalate; the humectant maintaining water-receptivity is a dihydric or polyhydric alcohol, e.g. diethylene glycol, glycerine trimethylol propane, sorbitol, hexylene glycol hexanetroil, or monoethylene glycol; the ink-receptivity is promoted with a high-boiling solvent, diacetone alcohol, ethyl lactate, ethylene glycol, monoethyl ether acetate or diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. One constituent may perform two functions, e.g. monoethylene glycol, as solvent and humectant.
