Abstract
1492524 Inlet and exhaust passages C L GOODACRE 31 Dec 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 46384/73 Heading F1B Annular shoulder 13 in the inlet passage 10 of an I.C. engine directs any fuel condensate carried along the passage walls inwardly into the air/fuel stream. The shoulder is formed by a ring 15 positioned between the cylinder head 3 and the valve seat insert 6, which itself has a portion 16 which projects into the combustion chamber and directs any fuel droplets which have not been entrained in the air/fuel stream, away from the adjacent cylinder wall. A similar construction is provided in the exhaust gas passage so that unburnt fuel or lubricating oil droplets are directed into the exhaust gas stream. Swirl is imparted to the induced mixture stream by a helical vane 17 provided in the inlet passage. To enhance postcombustion of the exhaust gases a thin-walled sleeve 21 of heat-resistant metal is positioned in the exhaust passage 22. The sleeve has outwardly projecting portions by which it is spaced about 1 mm. from the internal surface of the passage.
