Abstract
1492041 Catalyst composition; I.C. engine exhaust gas treatment UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974 13 May 1974] 8303/74 and 20988/74 Headings B1E and B1F A catalyst, e.g. for I.C. engine exhaust gastreatment comprises a particulate material having a sputtered coating of catalytic material, the coated particles being in association with a refractory material such that the refractory material and the coated particles are adhered together. The catalytic material may be one or more platinum group metals, suitably deposited as an unagglomerated atomic dispersion by the sputtering. The particulate material may be alumina, silica, lime, magnesia, carbon, spinels or hydraulic cement. The refractory material may be in the form of a sheet, e.g. of a surface oxidised iron-chromium-aluminium-yttrium alloy which may be flat or corrugated, granules, e.g. of alumina, or silicon carbide, a honeycomb structure, a mesh or a fibrous structure, e.g. of kaolin fibres, which acts as a carrier for the coated particles applied thereto. Alternatively, powdered refractory material, e.g. gammaalumina may be applied as a partial coating to the sputter-coated particles and used to adhere the particles together. The Examples relate to platinum-coated, alpha-alumina spheres which are (i) deposited on a surface oxidised ferritic alloy sheet, (ii) deposited on kaolin fibre wool, and (iii) bound together by powdered alumina. The catalyst may be used in a reactor for I.C. engine exhaust gas oxidation with added oxygen.
