Abstract
1491803 Bearings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 22 Jan 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 2759/75 Heading F2A [Also in Divisions F1 G1 and G3] A device for measuring axial or thrust bearing wear of a rotating shaft such as a turborotor 15 and for shutting the main valve of the turbomachine when excessive wear occurs comprises a follower piston 23 which moves to maintain a constant fluid gap between a spring pressed slidable piston nozzle 33 and the rotor 15, a slidable valve member 51 operable by the piston to cut off fluid pressure from supply pipe 75 to either of outlet ports 57a or 57b connected to pairs of pressure operated electric switches 67, 69, either of which pair when actuated by loss of fluid pressure set off alarms and operate solenoids shutting the machine down, and a linear variable differential transformer 63 which is directly attached to the follower piston 23 and translates the movement of rod 63a through a coil into a voltage differential operating an instrument indicating bearing wear. The follower piston 23 balanced by fluid supplied from pipe 73 to pipe 77 and inlet 29a and through a restriction 91 to pipe 81 and inlet 29b, fluid also being supplied to an internal rest chamber 39b via port 41. A micrometer 55 allows the sleeve 53 to be slidably adjusted relative to the valve 51 for calibration. In operation fluid is supplied to balance chambers 27a, 27b and valve 87 is closed so that balancing takes place through the calibrated orifice 91. In order to test the system valve 85 is opened causing only the follower piston 23 to move towards the rotor whilst the nozzle 33 remains stationary. This causes the valve 51 to cover port 57a thereby closing pressure switches 69 and operating the trip. Thereafter valve 85 is closed and valve 87 opened causing an increase in pressure in chamber 27b thereby moving piston 23 and nozzle 33 away from the rotor to move the valve 51 to cover port 57b and close pressure switches 67 so that both trip positions are tested.
