Abstract
1491675 Reducing gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 25 Nov 1974 [26 Nov 1973] 54681/73 Heading C5E A process for the production of a reducing gas comprises generating a first substantially hydrocarbon-free gas comprising CO, H 2 , CO 2 and H 2 O, and blending at least part of this gas with a second substantially hydrocarbon-free gas comprising CO and H 2 , the second gas having a temperature which is relatively low in comparison with that of the first gas. The first gas may be produced by partial combustion and thermal cracking of a hydrocarbon feed such as naphtha, and the second gas by a similar process, the gas produced in this case being cooled and purified to remove CO 2 , H 2 O, H 2 S and particulate carbon to give the second gas. This second gas may be heated to a temperature of 550-750 C. before mixing with the unpurified first gas, which has a temperature of 1100-1700 C. The first gas is blended within to 4 volumes of the second gas. The second gas may be cooled in a waste heat boiler such as is described in Specifications 851,542 or 1,332,809. Suitable reactors for the partial combustion are described in Specifications 780,120; 832,385; 850,409; 967,885. Suitable processes for the purification of the second gas are described in Specifications 879,090; 1,131,989; 965,358; 957,260; and 972,140. Specification 826,209 describes a water wash system for the removal of soot from the second gas.
