Abstract

1491258 Polyblends STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 15 April 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 15413/75 Heading C3G Polyblend compositions suitable for mixing with rigid plastics to produce plastics of improved impact resistance comprise: (a) 25-90% of a graft copolymer comprising a vinyl chloride suspension polymer on an acrylate polymer; (b) 10-75% by weight of a graft copolymer of a methacrylate polymer on a polyvinyl chloride suspension polymer; and (c) from 0-35% by weight of a polyvinyl chloride. A preferred thermoplastic polyblend comprises 20-90% of a rigid plastic together with 10-60% of (a), 1-30% of (b) and 0-40% of (c). The rigid plastic is preferably acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene, styrene-acrylonitrile, acrylate-styreneacrylonitrile; methacrylate-butadiene-styrene or styrene-acrylonitrile modified with ethylene propylene diene modified rubber. The acrylate is preferably a C 2 -C 8 alkyl acrylate and the interpolymer of component (b) preferably comprises 60-80% by weight of polyvinyl chloride and 40-20% by weight of the methacrylate component. The methacrylate component preferably comprises methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate. A flame retardant, e.g. antimony trioxide, barium metaborate, zinc borate, magnesium borate, mixtures of the borates or metaborate with antimony trioxide or metallocenes, e.g. ferrocene may be included.
