Abstract

1490764 Determining co-ordinates of position FERRANTI Ltd 15 March 1976 [1 April 1975] 13166/75 Heading G1A In equipment for digitizing the co-ordinates of a feature on a drawing the need for precise alignment of an index mark 11 on cursor 10 with the said feature is avoided by providing an array of photodiodes 16 on the cursor, the outputs of which are sequentially scanned to provide electrical signals indicative of the position of the feature relative to the index mark 11, these signals then being combined with coarse position signals from transducers 20, 21 to provide the accurate co-ordinates. Array 16 may be a monolithic optoelectronic array on a silicon chip and may be located away from the index mark from which it receive light by a mirror (19), Fig. 3 (not shown). It may alternatively comprise photodiodes arrayed to form a ring centred on the index mark Fig. 4 (not shown) or a square "patch". In the latter case logic circuit 18 may determine the co-ordinates of many points of a line constituting the said feature to deduce its characteristics. Transducers 20, 21 may be of the moirÚ fringe type or may be replaced by a grid of wires located beneath the drawing and arranged to detect a magnetic field produced by a coil in the cursor. A second sensing coil may be provided in the cursor to sense its angular orientation. The index mark may comprise a cross-shaped area illuminated by light fibres.
