Abstract

1490081 Olefin polymerization catalysts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Feb 1975 [18 Feb 1974] 7214/74 Heading C3P Olefins may be polymerized in the presence of catalysts comprising a component prepared by mixing (1) a solid compound of a Group IVa- VIa transition metal which has been ground with a Lewis base, (2) 0À05 to 8 moles per mole of (1) of R 2 AlX where R is hydrocarbyl and X is a hydrocarbyl or halogen, and (3) 0À05 to 4 moles per mole of (1) of the same or a different Lewis base, the number of moles of (3) being less than the number of moles of (2), and contacting the mixture with a linear C 3-8 1-olefin for a time sufficient to polymerize 2 to 400 moles of the 1-olefin per mole of (1). The catalyst may also comprise an organo compound of aluminium or a non-transition Group Ia or IIa metal, a Lewis base and/or a polyene, and may be used to polymerize propylene, butene-1 or 4- methyl pentene-1, optionally together with ethylene. Many examples are given in which the prepolymerized and polymerized olefin is propylene, the solid transition metal compound is titanium trichloride obtained by reducing the tetrachloride with aluminium, the organo aluminium compound is diethyl aluminium chloride or triethyl aluminium, and the Lewis base is octamethyl pyrophosphoramide, 2-dimethylamino - 1,3 - dimethyl - 1,3,2 - diazophospholidine - 2 - oxide, pentamethyl - # - dimethylaminoethyl phosphoric triamide, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>- tetramethyl ethyl phosphorodiamidate, hexamethyl phosphoric triamide, pentamethyl phosphorodiamidate and 2 - ethoxy - 1,3 - dimethyl- 1,3,2 - diazophospholidine - 2 - oxide; and the further aluminium compound is aluminium triethyl or diethyl aluminium chloride.
