Printing-surfaces; damping apparatus for lithographic &c. machines; offset machines.-A printing-surface, adapted to be used for reproducing designs, letterpress, &c. in the same manner as in lithographic printing by moistening before inking so that the ink is repelled from the moistened background, consists of a suitable flexible waterabsorbent material, such as paper, parchment, prepared linen, shirting, &c., on which the original to be reproduced is printed in printing-ink. The material may be wetted from the back so as to dispense with the moistening of the surface before each printing operation. In the machine shown, the absorbent material, with the original printed thereon, is applied to a jacket of felt, &c. on a perforated cylinder A. the end flanges of which are bent over towards the axis to retain water for soaking the felt. Tha background of the printing surface is thus kept moist so that ink is taken up by the design only. When reproducing letterpress, a transfer cylinder B is provided between the printing cylinder and the impression cylinder C.
