Abstract

1489568 Ignition systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 9 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 48845/73 Heading F1B An I.C. engine ignition system comprises a variable reluctance pick-up 110 producing output pulses when sparks are to be produced and feeding the pulses to a control circuit including a saturating amplifier, e.g. transistors 108 to 131, which results in the production of a spark when it de-saturates, but which, to minimize the risk of spurious signals in the pick-up producing a spark, is not saturated by spurious signals, a negative feedback path provided by capacitor 143 and resistor 144 ensuring slow saturation and relatively rapid de-saturation. The circuit consists essentially of an amplifier and a saturating amplifier, the former providing a negative signal to the ignition drive circuit 186, including transistor switch 163 and the ignition coil 165, until the latter saturates. Transistors 108 to 131 constitute an "operational amplifier" having a transfer function determined by capacitor 143 and resistors 109, 144 which give the amplifier a proportional plus integral response to input signals, the high frequency gain being insufficient to enable spurious signals to cause transistor 131 to turn off. Again, Fig. 3 (not shown), an alternative amplifier is described.
