Abstract

1489538 Sealed cells ESB Inc 22 July 1976 30526/76 Heading H1B A cell (Fig. 5) comprises a positive electrode layer 20, a negative electrode layer 30 and an electrolyte permeable separator layer 40 between the two electrodes, the separator consisting of an electrically non-conductive, inherently sealable (as defined) polymeric film material which extends beyond the periphery of the cell electrode layers, the perimeter of the separator layer being bonded between two further layers 80, 90 these layers being inert, impervious to the electrolyte and electrically conductive, to form a liquid impervious seal around the cell. A battery (Fig. 2, not shown), may be formed from these cells by placing an electrically conductive, electrolyte impervious layer (50A, 50B and 50C) between adjacent cells each intercell separator being extended beyond the cell periphery and sealed thereat to form part of a peripheral, liquid impervious seal at the edge of the battery. Suitable inherently sealable materials (defined as polymeric films capable of being sealed to superposed surfaces without application or addition of separate adhesive material) include polyethylene, ionomers, nylons, PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, yielding fibres by blown-film techniques or calendering; thermoplastic and theremoset resins along with thermosetting materials, e.g. phenolics, polyurethane film, rubbers, epoxy films and silicones. The polymeric film material of the separator may be laminated or homogeneous. In a battery the separator layers of the cells may extend outwardly beyond the seal between the separator and the further layers and sealed thereat to provide a second liquid impervious seal.
