Abstract

1489349 Pulp manufacture OWENS-ILLINOIS INC 11 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 44140/74 Heading D2W In a process for the manufacture of pulp which comprises cooking lignocellulosic material with an aqueous sodium-based cooking liquor at elevated temperature and pressure to form the pulp, and separating the spent liquor by filtration and washing, concentrating the spent liquor, and igniting the concentrated spent liquor in a furnace to form a smelt which is dissolved in water to form a liquor from which chemicals may be recovered, an alkali metal compound (other than sodium carbonate), or a mixture thereof, is added to the cooking liquor, the spent liquor, the concentrated spent liquor, or the smelt, in an amount sufficient to lower the melting point of the smelt to improve smelt fluidity and thereby reduce dissolving tank explosions. Specified alkali metal compounds are lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, potassium hydroxide, and alkali metal borates e.g. potassium borate, sodium borate, lithium borate.
