Abstract
1489065 Shock absorbers BRITISH STEEL CORP 22 May 1975 [24 May 1974] 23369/74 Heading F2E A shock absorber for use in motor vehicles comprises a crushable cylindrical housing 1 of metal sheet (e.g. tinplate) sealed at its ends and enclosing at least one length of metal sheet in the form of a coil 4 the housing 1 and the metal sheet providing a selected crush resistance against impact along the longitudinal axis of the housing 1. According to Fig. 1 the coil 4 is of corrugated sheet and has adjacent windings interleaved with a spacer in the form of a sheet 3. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the metal sheet is in the form of a coil 7 provided with depressions or dimples 8, a spacer sheet 3 being provided. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) a corrugated coil (4) is disposed in the annular space between the housing (1) and a can (9) located within it, and in Figs. 4, 8 (not shown) the can (9) also encloses a further coil (10) of corrugated sheet with a spacer sheet (13). Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate similar arrangements to Figs. 3, 4, but with dimpled coils (7, 11). Fig. 7 shows an arrangement similar to Fig. 4 wherein the interstices are filled with filler material 12, e.g. plastics foam. The spacer sheets may be of steel, particularly tinplate, or cardboard. The shock absorber may be located between a bumper and a vehicle body, and may incorporate a rubber or elastomeric shock absorbing pad to withstand low speed impacts.
