Abstract

1488931 Fluorinating and oxidizing polymeric fibres AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 16 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 1974 (2) 19 Feb 1974] 1910/75 Addition to 1395949 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division B5] A fibre, formed from any synthetic resin other than a polyester, is treated for less than 15 minutes with a gas containing less than 5% by volume of elemental oxygen and no more than 20% by volume of elemental fluorine. Fibres so treated in the examples are of nylon 6,6, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile and polyurethane. In addition Example 3 discloses the treatment of polyethylene film. The treatment is said to induce chain division and formation of carboxyl groups.
