Abstract
1488890 Oxidation process UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 17741/77 Divided out of 1488889 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Alpha, beta-unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids are produced by vapour phase catalytic oxidation of the corresponding unsaturated aldehydes with molecular oxygen in the presence of steam and a calcined oxidic catalyst Mo a V b T c where: T is Ti or Ti plus Ta and/or Nb wherein less than 50% wt. of Ti is Ta and/or Nb; a is 12; b is 1 to 14; and c is 0À1-12. The aldehyde may have the formula R 1 R 2 C = CR 3 CHO where R 1 is H or C 1 to C 6 alkyl and R 2 and R 3 are H or CH 3 . Specified reaction conditions include a feed comprising 0À2 to 5 moles oxygen and 1 to 25 moles steam per mole aldehyde, a pressure of 1 to 10 atm., a temperature of 200‹ to 400‹ C., a contact time of 0À1 to 10 sees. and a space velocity of 1000-6000 hr.<SP>-1</SP>. The feed may additionally comprise 0À1 to 5 moles (per mole aldehyde) of an alpha, beta-unsaturated olefin having the same number of carbon atoms as the aldehyde. The specified oxidations are acrolein to acrylic acid and methacrolein to methacrylic acid.
