Abstract

1488683 Oil coalescing fibrous structure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Sept 1975 [14 Oct 1974] 44395/74 Heading B1D A method for the removal of oil from an oil in water emulsion comprises contacting the emulsion with a fibrous structure comprising inorganic fibres of alumina or and zirconia which in the emulsion have a positive zeta potential, and removing the coalesced oil droplets so formed. The fibrous structure may be in the form of a woven or non woven fabric or loosely packed chopped fibre. It may be in the form of a tube (e.g. test tube shaped) or form a wall of a vessel containing the emulsion. It is preferred that the 'emulsion is caused to flow through the fibrous structure. The fibrous structure may additionally contain other fibres such as Ca and Cl silicate, or vitreous alumino silicate fibres or cotton or rayon fibres or polyolefine or polyester fibres. Preferred average diameter of the inorganic fibres is in the range 0.5-5.0 microns. The emulsion may also be contacted with fibres (e.g. a fibrous structure) having particles on their surfaces which exhibit oleophilic and hydrophobic properties.
