Abstract

1488340 Decaffeinating green coffee GENERAL FOODS CORP 16 June 1976 [24 June 1975] 25001/76 Heading A2B Green coffee is decaffeinated by contacting with a caffieine-deficient water extract of green coffee and removing caffeine from the resultant extract by contacting with particles of a non-ionogenic, cross-linked suspension polymer of ethylenically unsaturated molecules comprising 2-100 wt. % divinylbenzene, trivinylbenzene, alkyldivinylbenzene having 1-4 Me or Et groups in the nucleus, or alkyltrivinyl benzene having 1-3 Me or Et groups in the nucleus, and having a porosity of at least 10% and a surface area of at least 10 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The coffee and lean extract may be contacted in a semi-continuous manner with the lean extract passing through a series of columns containing coffee and first contacting the most extracted coffee. At the end of each cycle the most extracted coffee is discharged. The rich extract is then contacted with the polymer in batchwise or continuous manner and may then be recycled to treat further green coffee. Adsorbed solids may be eluted from the resin and non- caffeine solids may then be added to the decaffeinated beans or to the lean extract. Many suitable resin components are mentioned, the preferred resin is a divinylbenzene homopolymer or a styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer.
