Abstract

1488171 Formaldehyde polymerization SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 24 Dec 1974 [28 Dec 1973] 55711/74 Heading C3P Polyoxymethylenes are obtained by the polymerization of monomeric formaldehyde in a liquid medium which is a non-solvent for the polymer and in the presence of a chain transfer agent and of a block copolymer AB wherein A is a polyester derived from a lactone and B is a polyamide derived from a lactam. The block copolymer functions as a catalyst and also stabilizes the product by chemical incorporation therein. The product may be further stabilized by end-group reaction and the addition of anti-oxidants. Typical examples refer to the preparation of caprolactam/caprolactone, caprolactam / pivalolactone or pyrrolidone / valerolactone block copolymers by anionic polymerization, followed by the polymerization of formaldehyde in diluents such as toluene, oyclohexane or n-heptane and using regulators such as ethanol, cyclohexanol or butanol.
