Abstract

1488083 Furniture joints NEXUS MFG Ltd 5 Jan 1976 [14 Jan 1975] 1600/75 Heading F2M A connector arrangement for joining a leg 2, e.g. of a table, to a tubular rail 3, comprises a head 4 of key form which slides in an undercut channel 13 formed in the leg 2, inclined surfaces 16 on the head 4 engaging inclined surfaces 15 on lips 14 of the channel, and a tongue-shaped spigot 7, which may be either separate from the head 4, Fig. 2, or joined integrally with the head 4 by a neck portion 19, Fig. 3, clamping means being provided for securing the head 4 within the channel 13, and threaded holes 8, e.g. in nuts welded to the spigot 7, being associated with ramp surfaces provided by countersinks 9 in the spigot 7 such that, when countersunk-headed screws 18 are passed through holes 17 in the rail 3 and tightened in the holes 8, the wall of the rail, which is, e.g. of aluminium, is distorted into the countersinks 9 and, by arranging the holes 17 slightly offset from the holes 8 by a distance A, the rail is forced into tight abutment with the lips 14 at the same time as it is tightened against the spigot 7. The clamping means of Fig. 2 is a plate 5 and screws 6, the plate 5 being fitted in grooves 11 in the side walls of a groove 10 in the connector body 1 to cause clamping of the separate head 4 when the screws 6 are tightened. Ribs (17<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, not shown) are provided on opposite sides of the mouth of groove 10 and engage within the mouth of channel 13 so that opening of the groove during tightening is prevented. In the Fig. 3 embodiment, grub screws 21 threaded in bores 20 in the connector body 1 are screwed against the base of the channel 13 to effect clamping of the head 4.
