Abstract

148,749. Bird Machine Co., (Assignees of Clarke, R. S.). July 26, 1919, [Convention date]. Strainers having s h e e t straining materials.- The direction of flow through a screen is reversed for cleansing by displacement of the screen in an axial direction. Liquid to be strained enters from an inlet 2 the central chamber of a casing 1, which is divided by apertured partitions 6, 20, into three compartments. The liquid enters a cylindrical strainer 19 through its lower open end and the strained liquid leaves through an outlet 3. During straining the aperture in the partition 20 is closed by a valve 25, which is held against the partition by a spring 28, preferably a rubber cylinder supported on a disk or nut 22 screwed into the lower end of the casing. To cleanse the strainer it is moved downwards by means of a screwed shaft 12, the outside of the strainer being scraped by the edge of the aperture in the partition 6. To reach its lowest position the strainer forces open the valve 25 against the spring 28 and a reverse cleansing flow passes inward through the strainer, the liquid and impurities being discharged through a port 4.
