1487155 Broaching K HOFFMAN 29 July 1975 31601/75 Heading B3L In a method of machining flat surfaces on an end face of a workpiece 4 by passing a circular cross-section broaching tool 3 through a feed direction a, the broaching tool 3 is set inclined to the feed direction a, and at the end of each cutting feed stroke the tool 3 is rotated about its own axis through an angle corresponding to the arc of engagement of the cutting edges with the workpiece thereby to share the wear on the cutting edges around the periphery of the tool 3. The tool may be cylindrical, in which case its axis is parallel to the plane of the flat surface being machined, or conical, in which case the axis of the tool is also inclined relative to the said plane (Fig. 3, not shown). As shown, a pair of workpieces 4 are each machined by a tool assembly comprising a pair of divergent conical tools 31 and a following cylindrical tool 32 which removes a central ridge left between the cutting zones of the conical tools. The cutting edges of the tool may be formed as a helix.
