Abstract

1486821 Automatic speed control ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 13 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 1974 4 March 1974] 02156/74 and 9699/74 Heading G3R A speed-responsive system includes a first comparator receiving voltage signals representing the actual speed of a rotating member, the rate of change of the actual speed, and a reference speed. The output of the comparator is supplied to a second comparator, together with a constant frequency periodic voltage signal so as to produce a train of pulses of width dependent on the values of the inputs to the first comparator. As shown in Fig. 3, a motor vehicle engine 1 drives a toothed disc 3, causing an inductive transducer 4 to produce pulses 5 at a frequency proportional to engine speed. The pulses are converted to a voltage signal V s which is fed together with its time derivative to a first comparator 9, which also receives a reference signal derived either from a potentiometer 17 or from a memory circuit 14 which holds a signal supplied from the frequency to voltage converter circuit 6. The resulting error signal is amplified and fed to a second comparator 19 receiving a constant frequency ramp signal from a generator 20. The output of comparator 19 takes the form of constant frequency pulses of width dependent on the value of the error signal. These pulses are fed to an actuator D having an electromagnetic valve periodically connecting a bellows chamber with the inlet manifold of the engine 1 so as to effectively integrate the pulses and mechanically control the setting of the engine throttle. In use, the vehicle is accelerated under driver control until a desired speed is reached. A switch 13 is then opened so that the desired speed forms the reference signal for comparator 9, and automatic control by comparator 19 takes over to maintain the speed at the desired value. The actuator D is described and claimed in Specification 1486822, see Division F1.
