1486552 Smoke detector J B MERRIN and B RUSSELL 25 Nov 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 39898/73 Heading G1A A smoke detector utilizes a self-powered light emitting substance (one that requires no electric current to operate). The source may be eg an enclosure containing a radiation emitting substance, the enclosure being internally coated with a substance that glows when subjected to the radiation thus, a sealed glass capsule coated internally with phosphor and containing tritium gas. The source and detector may be arranged so that smoke causes either obstruction or scattering of the light to actuate an alarm.
