1486414 Laminates ROWLEY (R & D) Ltd 16 Sept 1974 [22 Sept 1973] 44569/73 Heading B5N In a continuous process for the production of sheet material having high quality surface finishes on both sides two carrier sheets 5, 6, e.g. of high strength polyester resin, are continuously fed, a fluid coating medium is applied at 10 to one surface of each carrier sheet to form a film thereon, the coated surfaces are brought into positions facing one another, a mouldable material is introduced, e.g. using injection means 17, between the coated carrier sheets and the carrier sheets, coating material and mandable material are subjected to pressure, e.g. using rollers 18, to produce a composite sheet which is cut into suitable lengths, e.g. using automatic traversing saw 20, the carrier sheets being capable of subsequent removal leaving a moulded sheet having outer surfaces constituted by the coating medium. The upper carrier sheet 5 is turned over through 180 degrees by a reversing mechanism comprising a frame 12 and rollers 13, 14 so that its coated surface faces downwards towards the coated surface of the lower carrier sheet 6. Each carrier sheet may be printed using triple equipment 9 with associated heaters 9A for printing in three colours and after printing and coating the sheets may be passed below heaters 11. Reinforcement material, e.g. glass fibre or chopped wire matting, may be applied to each carrier sheet from rollers 15, 16. Heating means 19 may be provided to accelerate curing. An uncoated strip may be left at each edge of each carrier sheet for folding over the edges of the composite sheet to form a removable packaging therefor. Gel-coat resins which may be clear or colour pigmented may be used and may be applied by the action of blades at suitable spacings. Duplicate applicators may be provided so that one set can undergo cleaning while the other is in use.
