Abstract
1486077 Fuel oil composition; modified waxes EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 24 April 1975 17033/75 Headings C5G and C5W A distillate petroleum fuel oil (boiling in the range of 250‹ to 1200‹ F.) is improved in its flow properties by 0À01 to 3 wt. per cent of a flow-improving hydrogenated alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon fraction of an amorphous normally solid wax having a melting point in the range of 80‹ to 200‹ F. and a number average molecular weight of 500 to 3000 obtained from a reisudal petroleum oil. The distillate petroleum oil may also be improved in its flow properties by containing 0À01 to 3 wt. per cent of a hydrogenated alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon fraction selected from (a) hydrogenated wax aromatic hydrocarbon pour point depressant which is the Friedel-Crafts condensation product of wax having a melting point of 100‹ to 200‹ F., chlorinated to 5 to 25 wt. per cent chlorine and an aromatic in a relative weight ratio of 5 to 15 parts of chlorinated wax per part of the aromatic and (b) the above hydrogenated alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon fraction of an amorphous normally solid wax, and 0À001 to 2 wt. per cent of an ethylene backbone pour point depressant which has a number average molecular weight of 500 to 50,000 and is selected from (1) branched polyethylenes, (2) ethylene polymers chlorinated to contain 1-30 wt. per cent chlorine, and (3) copolymers of 3-40 molar proportions of ethylene with a C 3 -C 16 alpha monoolefin, or a monoethylenically unsaturated mono- or dialkyl ester having 1-16 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups, or vinyl chloride, wherein the relative ratio of the hydrogenated alkyl aromatic to the ethylene backbone pour point depressant is in the range of 0À1 to 25 parts by weight aromatic per part by weight of the pour point depressant. The additives may be added as concentrates in hydrocarbon solution.
