Abstract

1485995 Foamed furan resins BOLIDT LICENSE NV 6 Nov 1974 [9 Nov 1973] 48103/74 Heading C3C A process for the manufacture of non-inflammable plastic foams comprise reacting in an aqueous medium, or mixture of one or more furan resins (resins derived from furfuraldehyde, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and/or furane co-condensates based on furfuryl alcohol and cresol melamine, urea and/or phenol) with an acid with from 1-500 parts by weight of additional resins selected from at least one of polyesters, acrylics, alkyds, polyurethanes, epoxy resins, phenolic resins and aminoplast resins per 100 parts by weight of furane resin. The acid may be present in an amount of 3-50 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of furane resin and the preferred acid is orthophosphoric acid. The composition may comprise blowing agents, preferably phosphoric acid with an acid-soluble carbonate and/or aluminium. Flame-proofing agents which may be added include those based on boron, phosphorus, bromine, chlorine, nitrogen and components selected from antimony trioxide, asbestos, perlite, vermiculite, sodium silicate, aluminium phosphate, aluminium chromophosphate, alumina, diatomaceous earth, gypsum, porcelain clays and/or cement. To convert the resin into a carbon foam under the action of heat, monohydric alcohols and/or polyhydric alcohols (sugar, dextrose, starch) and/or urea may be added. In the examples, 85% phosphoric acid is used with (1) furanurea condensate, Fondu (alumina cement), sodium silicate, kaolin, china clay, asbestos, dolomite, boric acid and aluminium oxide, (2) furane resin co-condensate/furan/urea, unsaturated polyester, asbestos, china clay, diatomaceous earth, calcium magnesium carbonate, slate powder, boric acid and expanded glass; (3) furane resin co-condensate/furane/melamine, epoxide and dolomite; (4) furane resin cocondensate/urea/furane, polyester, epoxide and calcium magnesium carbonate; (5) furane resin co-condensate/furan/phenol, silicified wood flour, kaolin, china clay, asbestos, aluminium silicate, calcium silicate, magnesium oxide, boric acid and wetting agent containing fluorine ; (6) furane resin co-condensate, polyester, aluminium powder, magnesium oxide, kaolin, gypsum, Moler clay and aluminium silicate; (7) furane resin co-condensate, urea/formaldehyde, waterglass, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, calcium carbonate and asbestos powder; (8) furane resin co-condensate, urea/formaldehyde, wetting agent, magnesium oxide, kaolin, gypsum, asbestos, china clay, and mica; (9) furane resin, urea/formaldehyde, acrylic resin, kaolin, aluminium powder and magnesium oxide; (10) furane resin, urea/formaldehyde, kaolin, highly disperse silica, glycerol and sugar; (11) furane resin, urea/formaldehyde, kaolin, china clay, asbestos, silicified word flour, aluminium silicate, calcium silicate and magnesium oxide.
