Abstract
1485619 Missile guidance system; television EMI Ltd 11 Dec 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 45349/73 Headings H4D; H4F A missile guidance system comprises, on the missile, a TV camera, means for transmitting TV signals derived from the camera to a control point, and means for reducing the signal supply rate to the transmitting means so as to reduce the transmission bandwidth required. The susceptibility of the system to jamming is reduced by the bandwidth reduction. Means may be provided for detecting the presence of jamming signals, and for then causing the bandwidth reduction means to become effective. In a first embodiment the camera can operate at either a normal scanning rate or a reduced scanning rate. In a second embodiment recycling storage means arearranged to receive television signals relating to a predetermined proportion of frames at a normal rate, and to supply signals to the transmitting means at a reduced rate. In a third embodiment, a means compares the signals relating to a frame scanned by the camera with those relating to the preceding frame, and supplies signals to the transmitting means, at a reduced rate, only if the difference between the frame signals exceeds a predetermined level. In a fourth embodiment, the comparing means also compares the frame signals with those relating to a further earlier frame, and compares the difference with a further predetermined level. In a fifth embodiment, means are provided for examining each frame scanned by the camera to determine the angular separation between the line of flight of the missile and the line of sight to a target in the scene viewed. Only if said angular separation exceeds a predetermined value, are television signals for said frame supplied to the transmitting means.
