Abstract
1485300 Blood oxygenating apparatus BAXTER TRAVENOL LABORATORIES INC 11 Dec 1974 [21 Jan 1974] 53661/74 Heading A5R A cardiopulmonary bypass system comprises a container 12 receiving venous blood flow from a patient and coupled to blood oxygenating and heating means 28 for revitalizing the blood which is returned to the patient via a pump 38, means being connected to the container 12 for indicating the volume of blood therein and hence the venous blood flow rate and for transmitting a signal controlling the flow rate of pump 38 so that blood is returned to the patient at substantially venous flow rate. The indicating means comprises a pressure transducer responsive to pressure of gas 22 in a U-tube 14 coupled to container 12. Container 12 is preferably a flexible bag. The means 28 includes a variable-speed pump 30, membrane oxygenator and heat exchanger 34 and is connected to a second flexible bag 36 supplying revitalised blood to the pump 38. Bags 12, 36 are connected by tubing 39 to permit blood flow between the bags. A reservoir 58 containing blood is connected to bag 36 for selective introduction of fresh blood into the system. The signal from transducer 16 is applied to an amplifier 44 providing an energising signal to a servo motor 46 acting through gearing 48 to rotate a potentiometer 50 controlling motor 40 which drives pump 38. Rotation of potentiometer 50 is indicated on dial 53 to provide a readout of blood flow rate. An adjustable resistance 54 ensures that pump 30 works at a higher rate than pump 38. The signal from the transducer may be manually overriden to provide for selective control of blood flow rate.
