Abstract
1485272 Pile fabrics FIELDCREST MILLS INC 13 Sept 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 40104/74 Heading D1K Rows of pile yarns 11 are arranged alternately with spacers 13, the yarns and spacers are compressed to form a block in a frame 12, the block is forced from the frame 12 a distance equal to the desired pile length, the face of the block is treated to cause the ends of the spacers 13 to foreshorten to leave the ends of yarns 11 protruding, the protruding yarn ends and spacers are sliced from the block brought into contact with a backing B and secured thereto to form a pile fabric. The spacers 13 may be of foamed polystyrene to render them compressible and the foreshortening treatment may be heat, heated liquid or chemical. The protruding yarn ends may be coated with adhesive to cause them to adhere to the backing or, if they are thermoplastic, may be heated to melt them, the heat also being used to foreshorten the spacers. The block is traversed over a knife and simultaneously the severed yarn and spacers deposited on the backing. The backing may be traversed relatively faster than the rate at which the yarn ends are being severed so that' the spacers expand and space the yarn ends farther apart than their spacing in the block. The yarn ends may be supplied as a woven fabric, with the yarn ends as weft, which is corrugated and interleaved with the spacers. An apparatus for continuously making the pile fabric is described.
