Abstract

1485180 Automatic control of position and course DECCA Ltd 16 Dec 1975 [18 Dec 1974] 54756/74 Addition to 1173442 Heading G3R In a system for automatically controlling the position of a water-borne vessel, e.g. a dredger with respect to a reference which may vary with time to define a course as described in the Parent Specification the vertical axis thrusters are replaced by at least two horizontal axis thrusters and a fore and aft propulsion unit. Position is determined by a digital computer from a measurement of the phase difference between radio or acoustic signals transmitted from and received by the vessel, after re-transmission from share stations 6, 8 or underwater transponders, the phase difference being representative of the range from each station. The computer output is two signals defining the position in geographical co-ordinates which are compared with the pre-programmed reference, the result being instantaneous positional error signals which are resolved into orthoganal co-ordinates relative to the ship by combination with a magnetic or gyro compass signal. The resolver output is combined with a heading error signal, derived from the compass, in an undisclosed signal processor which provides the appropriate corrective signals for position and heading to thrusters 9 ... 12 and propulsion unit 14. The thrusters are fixed to produce side thrust only, their effect being adjusted, and reversible, by pitch control of horizontal axis propellors. Manual over-ride is provided and the transmitters, receivers and stations may be duplicated for reliability.
