Abstract

1485152 Gas leak detector BRITISH GAS CORP 29 April 1975 [7 Feb 1974] 05656/74 Headings G1N and G1S A method of locating the position of ingress of a given gas into a buried duct such as a telephone cable duct 2 involves; purging the gas laden duct with a forced flow of clean air from a blower 3 to induce a gas-air interface at the point of gas ingress into the duct; introducing a gas detector probe 4 into the duct and drawing it along by means of the draw line 5 provided in the duct in the direction of purging air-flow so as to cause an audible and/or visible indication of the presence of the given gas at a remote indicating unit 8 connected by cable 7 to the probe; and determining the position of the probe in the duct and thus the point of gas ingress thereto. The probe position may be determined by measuring markers along the draw line or by an electromagnetic signal transmitted from the probe to a portable receiver 40 carried by an operator at the ground surface and providing an audible warning of the proximity of the probe. The gas sensor (11) Fig. 3 (not shown) may be a Toguchi type connected in a bridge arrangement to compensate for variations in supply potential and providing from loud-speaker (52) a signal of frequency dependent upon gas concentration.
