Abstract

1484900 Flame retardant polyester fibre AVTEX FIBERS Inc 13 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 39938/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A flame retardant polyester fibre comprises from 95 to 72 parts by weight, based on the fibre, of a linear polyester and 5 to 28 parts by weight, based on the fibre, of a two-component flame retardant additive comrpising (a) from 20 to 80% by weight of an aryl spirophosphate of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 are phenyl or naphthyl optionally substituted with 1 to 3 chlorine or bromine atoms, C1-C3 alkyl, C1-C3 alkoxy or phenyl or phenoxy optionally substituted with 1 to 5 chlorine or bromine atoms, and (b) from 80 to 20% by weight of a chlorinated or brominated dionyl compound containing at least 40% by weight of chlorine or bromine. Specified polyesters are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene 2,6 - naphthalate and poly 1,4- cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate. The flame retardant additives used in the examples are (a) spirophosphates of the above formula in which R 1 and R 2 are phenyl, naphthyl, chlorophenyl, dichlorophenyl and bromophenyl, and (b) octabromobiphenyl, decachlorobiphenyl and decabromodiphenyl ether.
