Abstract
1484864 Iron-containing catalysts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 Nov 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 57321/73 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions Cl and El] A catalyst comprises over 70% w/w (calculated as Fe 3 O 4 ) of metallic iron and/or iron oxide and/or iron nitride and/or iron carbide in the form of approximately spherical granules having a pore volume of at least 0.01 ml/g in pores of radius greater than 104A. Suitably, the granules have a pore volume of at least 0.05 ml/g in pores of radius smaller of 104A and the iron is present in the metallic state. The granular material may contain 1-20% of other iron group metals, especially cobalt. The granules may comprise oxidic material, e.g. Fe 3 O 4 , metallic iron having a passivating outer oxide layer, iron nitride having an outer passivating oxide layer or a carbided iron material. For use in ammonia synthesis, the granules may contain up to 5.0 wt. % calcia, up to 2.0% wt. magnesia, 0.5 to 5.0% wt. alumina and 0.3 to 2.0% wt. potassia. Other oxides, e.g. of Rb, Cs, Be, lanthamides, actinides, Mo or W may be present, as may platinum group metals, cobalt metal or silica. For use as a catalyst for hydrogenating nitriles, the granules may contain up to 5% wt. refractory oxide. For use as a catalyst for the reaction of carbon oxides and hydrogen, the granules may contain alkali. For use as a catalyst for decomposing steam, the granules may contain refractory oxides to increase its resistance to sintering and also oxides reducible more or less easily than iron oxide. The oxidic form of the granules is formed by fusing iron oxide and any other components present, cooling, crushing, selecting a particle size fraction to give the required pore volume, granulating and sintering. Fugitive materials may be added during granulation and then burned-out of the granules during firing to give the required pore volume Pores of steel less than 104A may be formed by reduction of the oxide to metallic iron. The nitride may be formed by reaction of the reduced granules with ammonia. Partial conversion to iron carbide may be effected by treatment with carbon monoxide.
