Abstract

1484743 Emptying tanks G F GERDTS KG 22 May 1975 [6 July 1974] 22286/75 Heading B8T [Also in Divisions F2 and E1] A bottom discharge valve for a vessel 5 containing a heated molten material, e.g. sulphur or bitumen, which is liable to solidify in the lower regions of the valve comprises a lower valve formed by the lower end of sleeve 10 co-operating with seat 9 and an upper valve formed by closure 15 co-operating with the upper end of the sleeve. A spring 24 acting against the lid 23 of a fixed guide cage 22 biases the valves to the closed position. To discharge the molten material lever 17 is operated to lift push rods 20, 21 and unseat closure 15 whereupon the material flows through sleeve 10 to outlet 7. The solidified material surrounding the lower regions of sleeve 10 is thus heated and melts so that when push rod 20 is moved further upwardly to unseat sleeve 10 by engagement of collar 19 with bush 18, the material can flow over seat 9 to outlet 7. In a modification (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) a one-piece push rod without a return spring is provided.
