Abstract

1484715 Automatic control of speed SONY CORP 30 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 42388/74 Heading G3R In a speed-control system for use in video tape apparatus, the control of speed and phase of the rotary tape read head uses a counter having an initial count dependent upon tape speed and counts clockpulses for periods dependent upon the head speed. The system is such that the rotary head control is independent of the speed of the tape when recording. In the embodiment, control pulses recorded on the tape in positional relationship with parallel oblique data tracks are selected to form a pulse train CTL, having a frequency dependent upon tape speed. The pulse train CTL is fed to counters 33, 34, 35 which count clockpulses CP for the duration between CTL pulses, the count thus achieved being held and inverted at 44 to 55, to form an initial count for counters 21, 22 and 23. The clockpulses CP are counted for the interval between pulses in a train PG, which has a frequency proportional to head speed. The resultant count is passed via D-A converter 29 to provide a voltage Is dependent upon the speed of the rotary head but independent of the speed of the tape at the time when the control pulses were recorded thereon. The signal ls is used in a rectroactive speed-control system to control the head speed and phase, relative to the oblique data tracks, e.g. by using a brake.
