Abstract

1484585 Modified polymers VIAKOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 12 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48931/74 Heading C3P Modified polymers which are water-soluble on neutralization are prepared by (A) copolymerizing in a water-miscible solvent a mixture of (a) 5-25 parts by weight of acrylic acid methacrylic acid or a mono-ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with a C 1-4 mono- or di-hydric alcohol (b) 20-80 parts by weight of a C 1-5 alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and (c) up to 60 parts by weight of a vinyl aromatic monomer, the sum of (a)+(b)+(c) being 100 parts, and then (B) reacting the product with either an equimolar mixture of, or an equimolar reaction product of, 20-35 parts by weight of a diicocyanate in which the two isocyanate groups are not of equal reactivity and 30-50 parts by weight of a C 16-20 unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. In examples, the copolymers are of acrylic acid/n-butyl acrylate/styrene, butylene glycol mono - maleate / ethyl acrylate / isobutyl methacrylate / vinyl toluene or methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/ styrene, and are modified by reaction with linolenic acid/isophorone diisocyanate mixture or reaction product, soya oil fatty acid/isophorone diisocyanate mixture or reaction product, or linolenic acid/commercial tolylene diisooyanate mixture. The products may be neutralized with an inorganic or organic base, e.g. triethylamine. Use.-As binders in air-drying paints.
