Abstract

1484466 Making dynamo-electric machines; composite casting; metal pouring GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 17 Sept 1974 40486/74 Heading B3A and B3F An end frame 1, Fig. 5, of a dynamo-electric machine is attached to a stator beam 3 &c. by inserting the beam within a socket 9 and securing it therein by a hardenable material. In the embodiment the machine is assembled at a loading station in apparatus 11, Fig. 1, which is then transferred to a casting station for casting aluminium, zinc, lead &c. into the sockets. At the loading station with the rotor 25 and lower end frame 1 assembled on a lower fixture 15, a lower slide 19 is raised to drive upwardly a cylindrical member 95 carrying shims 33, the shims 33 being disposed about the rotor. Clips (133), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be cammed against the frame 1, and asbestos pads 135, 167 close the sockets in the frames. The operator now loads the stator 5 and upper frame 21, and upper slide 17 is lowered driving down an upper fixture 13 on guide pins 41, 41a to engage the lower fixture 15 to which it is now locked by arms 43, 43a. Rods 63, 63a on the upper slide engage and depress against return springs 67, 67a, Fig. 4, fixture rods 65 carrying clamps 77, 77a. As the clamps move away from sleeves 73, 73a carrying stops 75, 75a, springs 51, Fig. 5, urge a trunnion block 153 downwards engaging its plunger 53 with the upper end of the rotor spindle 27, trunnions 47 being disposed in slots 155 in a yoke 157. A pin 165 on the upper slide acts on a bell crank 149 to withdraw a wedge 55, so that springs 57 can urge a wedge block 61 downwardly against the upper end frame 21 to clamp the assembly. The stops 75, 75a and clamps 77, 77a are now turned inwardly, Fig. 4, above and below the stator 5 by rotating the square sliderods 63, 63a with air cylinders acting on levers 71, 71a. At the same time the upper slide 17 is automatically raised slightly so that springs 67 raise the clamps. Upon engagement of one of the clamps with a high point on the stator further raising of the other clamp into engagement with the stator causes pivoting of an arm 49 supporting the rod 63. The stator is now raised by both clamps until a high point on the upper surface engages one of the stops 75. Further upward movement tilts arm 45 until the other stop engages the stator. Gears (79, 79a) Fig. 3 (not shown), on the upper slide are now rotated for turning gears 83, 83a, Fig. 1, which engage screw threads on wedge sleeves 89 for clamping inner sleeves 87 against sleeves 73, 73a, thus locking in position the clamped stator. The upper slide 17 is now withdrawn so that spring 151 returns the wedge 55 for containing the force of springs 57. The lower slide also is withdrawn after releasing a bayonet connection 91, 93 so that the shims 33 remain in position. Play is introduced between the components by rotating a screw 101, Fig. 5, until it contacts the shaft 27 or an auxiliary shaft and a torque limiter R operates. A nut 103 and spacer 105 are now driven through distance T to raise the rotor and top frame 21 relatively to the bottom frame 1 against the force of springs 51, 57. The end play is maintained until the beams 3 are fixed in both the upper and lower frames after transfer of the fixtures 13, 15 to the casting station. At the casting station a carriage 175, Fig. 7, is raised by an air cylinder to carry a ladle 115 to a receptacle 113. An abutment 120, Fig. 11, removes a trip 225 from a post 223 so that this and an outer tube 211 may be rotated by a spring 219. When a slot 215 in the tube 211 aligns with a slot 217 in an inner tube 213 a metal slug 111 falls into the ladle 115. A slide 181 in inclined roller guides 179, 179a on the carriage is now driven by a cylinder 183 to insert the ladle 115 in a R.F. heater 117. After withdrawal from the heater the ladle is lowered to the socket 9, and a crank 185 on the slide is rotated for combined raising and tilting of the ladle through linkage 193, 197 and a chain 205, Fig. 10 (not shown). Surplus metal is removed by rotating the ladle through gearing 231, 233 driven by a rotary solenoid 207. A plurality of casting units may secure all of the beams to the lower frame 1 simultaneously.
